Your local bill and precepts

One bill can fund several public bodies. See who charges what, then model how each part could change.

National Band D precepts

All 296 English billing authorities now have a published breakdown naming the county or GLA, police, fire and combined-authority bodies. The parish return adds 10,245 local-body records, including four ceased entries, with reported 2025/26 and 2026/27 figures.

Search for your council to see its components, individual local precepts and long-term Band D history. National components are area averages; exact property bills still need a verified local schedule.

What counts as a precept?

A precept is an amount another body asks the billing council to collect. Depending on the area, a bill can include a county, police, fire, mayoral or combined-authority, and parish or town council element. The site records each published charging body and its area of application.

Bundled charges must only count once

Some mayoral charges include police or fire services. For example, London's GLA precept supports several services, including policing and fire. Its police element does not apply in the City of London. Our model supports bundled components so the same service cannot be added again as a separate charge. Why confirm a parish?

A postcode is a group of addresses, not a unique property. ONS explains that postcodes can straddle boundaries. The lookup provides a suggested locality, and you confirm it against the property before we show a local charge. We do not save the postcode.

How local schedules are admitted

We need an adopted year-specific charge schedule, published bands for each component, a verified charging area, and a total that reconciles to the council's published bill. A missing component is marked unavailable. We do not manufacture it by subtracting unrelated national averages or infer a parish from a council name.
